John Carlos is a former American track and field athlete who is best known for his iconic protest during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He, along with fellow African American athlete Tommie Smith, raised their fists in a Black Power salute during the medal ceremony for the 200-meter race as a symbol of solidarity and protest against racial inequality in the United States.
Carlos was born on June 5, 1945, in Harlem, New York City. He was a talented sprinter and won several medals at various track and field events throughout his career. In addition to his protest at the 1968 Olympics, Carlos also set world records and won numerous accolades in his athletic endeavors.
After his athletic career, Carlos became a coach and advocate for social and racial justice issues. He continues to be recognized for his bravery and activism in protesting racial inequality and discrimination.
